Bile is stored in the gallbladder. Although the liver continually produces bile, it is the gallbladder that concentrates and holds it between meals. When fatty chyme enters the small intestine, cholecystokinin prompts the gallbladder to contract and release bile through the bile ducts into the duodenum to aid fat emulsification. The pancreas and small intestine themselves do not serve as storage sites for bile; bile can be released directly from the liver into the intestine, but the storage location is the gallbladder.
